The good from a disaster.  What good can possibly come from a disaster like a coal mine caving in? Unlike the mysterious disappearance of Flight MH370, which left hundreds of families with unanswered questions about lost loved ones, the coal mine disaster in Manisa, Turkey, featured heroes and survivors. This remains a horrific tragedy, but the more than 350 miners saved, like the one pictured here, help us maintain hope.

Bless you, Prime Minister. Could anything be more brilliant than this remarkable picture of 90-year-old, Hiraben, blessing her son. Narendra Modi, the recipient of the blessing, is the new prime minister of India. His mother, according to various news stories, still travels by auto-rickshaw, a point that may have curried Modi favor with voters. Either way, Modi is now prime minister and is blessed by a beautiful mother.

It may be an ad but. . .  This appears to be one of those feel-good advertisements, designed to tug at your heartstrings, while subconsciously aiming to make you use a product. No matter its intentions, we think Google may have created the most important video ever. In a beautifully-produced, remarkably graceful two minutes, the creator of the Rubik’s Cube asks powerful questions and Google shares a message we can’t ignore.

Insane

Burritos and AK-47s. a Dallas-area Chipotle not only welcomed customers carrying semiautomatic weapons this week, someone took pictures. Even though Texas is an open-carry state, which requires no background check or age limit for gun possession (how insane is that?), a restaurant like Chipotle has the right by law to prohibit guns, but this one doesn’t. Hey, this is Texas, where you get your burrito with a bang.

Firenado.  This incredible picture, taken by a Missouri woman, catches what appears to be a tornado made of fire. This phenomenon, known as a fire whirl in meteorologist parlance, occurs when competing air temperatures force horizontal flames to turn vertical. The firenado can, obviously, be dangerous but, ultimately, it provides some insanely cool science to discuss with students or with friends who like crazy stuff.

Spiderman has nothing on this superhero. In the no-brainer insane video of the week (this one could probably go under “brilliant” too), a California boy was attacked by a dog, in his driveway. While riding his bike and minding his own business, 4-year-old Jeremy Triantafilo suddenly had his neighbor’s dog chewing on his leg. What could have been a tragic mauling, turned into the viral video of the week. Even if you’ve seen it already, this superhero cat is worth a second look.
