Thanks for sharing! I’ve also found that technology can be useful in class (although you can’t rely on it all the time, as you mentioned).

I’m curious: in your oral class, do you rely solely on a camera, or do you require students to also speak in front of the class without technology? If so, how would you compare with the results with using the camera?

I’ve found it very effective – especially when I project my phone screen onto the front wall using the digital projector. This allows for the whole class to own a different kind of multimodal space. Students respond to messages from me while I comment, praise and correct their contributions orally. Likewise in my oral classs I challenge students to introduce themselves confidently to the camera. Interestingly I’ve found I can’t use WeChat in every class otherwise even my best students find it hard to resist wondering off into other chat conversations with their friends and family outside the classroom.
