I will think more on it and incorporate some of the points into my teaching/learning program. Thanks.

I am interested in all ways of engaging students. Did you know that about a quarter of the students in your class may be suffering from a form of computer anxiety and may not wish to engage via Twitter? They are already at a huge disadvantage. How do you manage not to put an even bigger obstacle in their way. I am working on this for my PhD so would really appreciate any thoughts and ideas here. Thanks again. I work in HE lecturing in IT These comments are my own.

The thing about Twitter is that it evolves constantly. You can now add video, graphics and Twitter Cards, which show much more of an article/blog post in the tweet. So, in reality, it’s no longer just 140 characters. My students told me FB was no longer cool–that they believe Twitter is the “in” tool now. I think when used effectively to engage kids, they’ll love Twitter. With Twitter’s new in-app video feature, kids can shoot 30-second edited videos and tweet them immediately. How cool is that?

First of all, 140 characters doesn’t allow for much depth of anything. Secondly, my students tell me that Twitter and Facebook are no longer cool.

I am fresh out of college and many teachers have this bad taste in their mouth for newer teachers that are beginning their careers. I honestly agree with you on all of these things. The are so many students who need more than just grades. This isn’t what the emphasis should be placed on. When we focus on grades, the students focus on memorization, which is short term. They should be focusing in mastery, which is long term. This was a very insightful post. Thank you for your honesty and constructive criticism.

I always say that school is student’s “real world”. It’s where they interact, learn, play, etc. It’s real to them. We can make it an authentic place for them to grow, or a waste of their time. It’s our job to do what we know is best for them when we have them. We can’t not do the right thing because of a job that probably won’t exist in 10 or 20 years.
