There is a useful power point overview on the Ministry website http://www.tki.org.nz in the assessment domain. Our school has also taken the idea further now and use learning journals for maths, reading, and writing. We ‘unpack’ the standards WITH the students so they know the learning intention, they know WHY they are learning it, how we are going to teach/learn it, and they identify how they will know they have been successful.

I’m writing a new book on Assessment, using the SE2R model from Role Reversal. I’d love to know more about your feedback system. Do you have anything you can lead me to that I might quote in my book?

We do however discuss with the kids the ‘standards’ we are endeavouring to help them reach…but it is about mastery…so ALL progress ANY student makes is celebrated…they know what they need to do to improve because we talk about it with each student…I haven’t heard of ‘narrative feedback’ but we have been giving students ‘feedback/feed-forward’ since 2007… Same thing I would imagine…basically a learning conversation.

It’s wonderful to know that schools in other countries are moving to progressive, student-centered learning. Are you still using number and letter grades? This is the real fight I’m working on — attempting to eliminate grades, in favor of narrative feedback. Thanks for commenting.

I have seen awesome changes in engagement and motivation. Results of the survey I have carried out indicate we are on the right track to learning better ways to cater for today’s learners. It is all in my blog!
