I wonder, is erudite the new cool?

But I do take great exception to your use of “erudite” as a negative quality. My hard-won erudition is the core of makes me a great teacher – the rest is just style.

My wife has taught students with autism for many years and is an expert in all areas of special education and sensory processing issues. We discuss these issues often. The question I think teachers have is how to balance the scales of a heterogenous class. Some kids love music, some have the sensory problems you note. How do we serve all audiences? I’d love to hear your suggestions and others’, as well. Thanks for bringing this up.

If they’re silent, it might appear that they’re focused. If they’re unusually vocal or active, it might seem that they’re bursting with joyous engagement. (I voice this reservation about loud music on student-initiated Hall & Oates Wednesday for my Latin II class. My objection isn’t to music in class or novelty.)

All 5 things are ways to create connection and bring engagement to learning. When I was a middle school science teacher, embracing chaos in my classroom was the cool teacher thing I did. Love the learning that came out of the chaos.
